Queens, NY native and Art Historian, Demont Pinder, saluted Mr. Nasir Jones for the commemoration of his classic album, Illmatic, by posting a painting of the album cover which Pinder painted a year ago. Twenty-four years since its birth, Illmatic, is arguably one of the best hip-hop albums of all time, so it’s only right that one of the illest painters with a keen ability to document history and culture in a prolific way would re-create the album cover of the great poet, who not only put Queens on the map, but created the NY Anthem, “New York State Of Mind.”
Pinder is an Artist who loves and fundamentally grasps the idea of the magic created when Art, Fashion & Music collide in a brilliantly poetic way. Whether on the road with an iconic hip hop Artist, popping up at a club in Maryland or Washington D.C. to paint whoever is performing that particular evening or sharing his epic collaborations such as the visual Art and poetry reading he did with Omari Hardwick for Art Basel 2016, Pinder will never cease to amaze you with his colorful artistic creations and larger than life, yet humble spirit. And, oh, does he have an eye and knack for splattering up some hoodies, jeans and jackets too.
