It seems like in this day and age a new movie opens up every week, if not every day. Typically these films take a similar cookie cutter route through all too familiar narratives within Hollywood. I mean let’s face it, we all are way too familiar with boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, then their relationship is shaken up by drama, next comes the reconciliation and then of course boy sets off in the sunset with girl and, together, they live happily ever after. But what if boy fell inlove with girl, who accepts boy for who he is, even if it includes boy having a deep secret desire to dress like a woman and perform “Ave Maria”,  Frank Sinatra style???

Cherry Pop director, Assaad Yacoub’s, latest film, trumps the typical mold bringing this film into the spotlight as he tells a fantastic story utilizing characters that have not been used often enough…drag queens. Yes, that is correct. What an unconventional story to unfold and what a revolutionary view point to convey.

Cherry Pop is about one crazy night in the life of a local bar’s drag show routine. A newcomer struggles with being the outcast on his first night, while a legend comes to terms with life after her last night in drag. Along the way, you are introduced to a bunch of other back-stabbing queens with their own problems, who hilariously keep the audience engaged in the flow of the story.

Starring several RuPaul favorites and alums including: Detox, Latrice Royale and Bob the Drag Queen along with their costars Misty Violet, Mayhem Miller and Lars Berge (The Cherry), this movie throws more shade than a 300 year oak tree in the summer time, keeping the audience in stitches as the claws come out and the feathers start flying. This film also sheds a lot of light and challenges traditional gender roles and societal constructs of sexuality in a non-threatening and comical way.

In all, Cherry Pop, is an all around delightful film full of humor, shade and wigs with an ultimate message to love who you are and to be yourself unapologetically. If this film were a sundae, it would definitely be filled with nuts; and of course, a cherry on top.
