Recently HeArt of COOL (HoC) had the amazing opportunity to interview a true visionary in the art world today, Domingo Zapata. Zapata was kind enough to take a few minutes out of his busy and creative schedule to answer a few  questions about his personal history, his past collaborations and his advice to fellow artists. We were enamored with the him as a human being and creative so much that we highlighted his work this past Tuesday for HOC ART Tuesday’s. Check out what Zapata had to share with us and keep an eye out for his artwork.

HoC: Describe your start in Art? Also what was the first painting you sold, and how did that come about?

Domingo Zapata: I don’t remember a day in my life without painting. I sold my first painting in college during a collective show organize by the art section of my school. I did not think that much about it really, I was just happy to have made a little bit of money.

HoC: What advice would you give to a young person that wants to be a famous painter like you?

Domingo: To believe in themselves, never stop painting, work very hard and dream big.

HoC: You recently did collaborations with Alice + Olivia and with Superga, tell us about those projects. How did they happen? What was your favorite part of each experience? What were the similarities between the projects and what were the major differences?

Domingo: Both projects came very organically because I know the designers of the companies personally. I always wanted to connect my art with fashion and this have been an amazing start.  They were two very different projects as one was apparel and the other one shoes, I was very lucky that both gave me an amazing team to work with.

HoC: There’s a gallery in Aspen named after you, is that your gallery? What can fans of your work see and buy there of yours?

Domingo: It’s a gallery that represents me there in exclusivity own by a good friend of mine. You can find a variety of my latest works there.

HoC: Do you have any shows coming up? What can your fans expect to see next from you? Any news you’d like to share?

Domingo: I have a show coming up by then of May in Detroit and I am also working on the artwork of a new broadway musical that will open next year called Malinche.

HoC: What is the Heart of Cool to you?

Domingo: To create without regrets, always letting my imagination flow.
