Just two weeks ago today, the Supreme Court of the United States in the Obergefell v. Hodges case, made a decision rooted in the spirit of our constitution to legalize same-sex marriages across all 50 states. The catalyst for this decision was spawned by one man, plaintiff Jim Obergefell, who dedicated his life to caring for his dying husband (John Arthur) and when he passed, Obergefell was denied the right to be listed on Arthur’s death certificate. It was in this moment that Obergefell decided to stand up for his constitutional rights as a citizen of the United States of America and fight for his love and marriage to Arthur to be vindicated.

This recent monumental judicial decision now means that “any couple — straight, lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender — may obtain a marriage license and make their commitments public and legal in all 50 states,” as written in the heart-felt open letter that Obergefell published and that the White House released Friday, June 26, 2015.

marriage equality all 50 states

By and large, the entertainment and global business community have responded with happiness and cheer in support of the Supreme Court’s historical decision to legalize same-sex marriage. A very smart business move to say the least, as according to a 2014 Witeck Communications updated analysis, the estimated purchasing power of the U.S. gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender adult population is at a whopping 884 billion dollars. It was inspiring to see iconic brands such as Twizzlers, Ben & Jerry’s, Absolut Vodka amongst many others, put marketing initiatives and dollars behind the spirit of progress that manifested in America and across the globe with this Supreme Court ruling.

In fact social media immediately went into a frenzy, with anyone ranging from the average citizen and company to tastemakers and celebrities, all sharing their supportive rainbow congratulatory posts across various social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
