In a world where everyone’s phone seems to be attached to their hand at all times, it’s refreshing to see technologies being created to help the world disconnect. As quiet as it’s kept there are times when you’d like to feel free from the ball and chain that has become your mobile device. Enter the Light Phone.
The Light Phone was created to be the phone away from your phone. When you’re out for a jog, taking a walk on a beach, or only want a phone in case of emergency the Light Phone is there just giving you enough security to exist in the modern world without the constant pings and updates from a regular cell phone. The Light Phone only lights up when you make or receive a phone call and also tells the time. No texts, no push notifications, just you.
Preloaded with 500 minutes, the Light Phone is an unlocked pre-paid cellphone that works independently of cellphone carriers. If you actually don’t own a smartphone—or the more common case, if your smartphone dies—the Light Phone will still work, making it a useful emergency back-up phone. Artist and designer Joe Hollier and mobile phone industry veteran Kaiwei Tang (who’s brought products like Motorola Defy, Droid 4, Razr to life) are taking control over how they want to interact with tech in their own lives: by creating a phone designed to be used as little as possible.
The Light Phone’s release is slated for May 2016, check out more at www.TheLightPhone.com.
